With Sydney Back's Pinotage, the signature grape of South Africa comes into kosher. It is Backsberg's oak-aged Pinotage, grown in Paarl, and it has the concentrated blackberry-and-smoke character that only this varietal gives. It is mevushal for the Shabbos table and KFP for the Yom Tov table.
Mood: Bold, smoky, Cape.
"A kosher Pinotage is a rare beast, and this one gets it right. The Paarl fruit is real, the oak is real, and there is just enough of a smoky edge for it to stand out at the Shabbos table."
Tasting Notes
The color is a deep, opaque ruby. Ripe blackberry, dark plum, mocha and a whisper of smoky spice make up the nose. Medium-full on the palate, it has tannins that are grippy but rounded, layered dark fruit, a hint of tobacco and the earthy warmth that is a Pinotage signature. It finishes long, spicy and satisfying.
Food Pairing
This is the braai wine. Match it with grilled steak, lamb chops, or Shabbos brisket with dark spice. It is solid as well next to BBQ ribs, boerewors sausage, cholent, and aged hard cheeses.
