Hacienda De Chihuahua Sotol Anejo
High up on the mountain slopes of the Chihuahuan desert grows a small plant called Sotol aka Agavacea. While it resembles agave, they are otherwise unrelated. Hacienda de Chihuahua was one of the early Sotol entries in the American market. French-trained distiller José Daumas Gil de Partearroyo (aka “Pepe”) utilizes modern equipment and techniques to create an updated expression of this classic spirit. Steam-roasted in modern ovens and triple-distilled in a double column copper-still it is aged for 2 years in French oak barrels.
Holding on to its rusticity there is a pronounced note of moist soil, accompanied by cola, cinnamon and parsley on the nose. On the palate there is a grassiness which strangely resembles that of rhum agricole, more soil, vanilla and parsley. A peculiar spirit and a must try for any agave spirits geek
